Fundraisers, Programs Planned To Celebrate Holidays

TAMPA - The holiday season is in full swing with many fundraisers and special programs, including:

•A holiday ornament class for elementary school-age children will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon today at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, 200 N. Tampa St.

The Lightning mascot, Thunderbug, will make an appearance. The fee is $20 per child for museum members and $30 for others. Call (813) 221-2222 for information.

•Jingle Thru the Jungle includes a 5K competitive run, a 1-mile fitness walk and a Santa Chase for ages 12 and younger.

The event will be Wednesday at Lowry Park Zoo, 1101 W. Sligh Ave., and benefits the Arthritis Foundation. Registration is at 6 p.m. with the races beginning at 7 p.m.

Participants wear jingle bells on their shoes, and some dress in holiday attire or costumes. The after-the-race party features food, music and beverages.

Registration is $25 for the 5K and 1-mile walk, with a $5 discount for students. The Santa Chase is $10. To register, go to www.arthritis.org or call (813) 968-7000.

•The Shop for Specialized Education fundraiser, featuring a silent auction, prizes, discounts, food and champagne, will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Deborah Kent's, 2120-A S. Dale Mabry Highway.

Proceeds will benefit Hope Preparatory Academy, which serves students with learning disabilities. Admission is $20 at the door. For information, call (813) 259-1150.

•LifePath Hospice's Lights of Love tree-lighting ceremony will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at LifePath Hospice Community Resource Center, 3010 W. Azeele St.

For a $25 donation, people can purchase a light in memory of a loved one. The ceremony is free, but reservations are needed by calling (813) 871-8111.

•The Friday Morning Musicale will sponsor a holiday music program at 10 a.m. Friday at The Musicale Building, 809 Horatio St.

The agenda includes an auction, the free program at 11 a.m. by the Sickles High School Pop Ensemble with Patricia Evans as director, and lunch with hosts Violet Mandese and Betty Dickman.

The lunch is free for first-time guests; $5 for others. Attendees can bring a holiday item for the auction.

Barbara Forgione Salon, 4317 W. El Prado Blvd., will host a wine tasting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The event, featuring samples from Cork & Olive, will benefit The Spring, and attendees should bring unwrapped gifts for women and children residing there. Reservations are needed by calling (813) 832-1115.

•The Tampa Oratorio Singers present a 40th anniversary holiday concert, Carols with the Florida Orchestra Brass Quintet, at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 9.

The event will be in the Fletcher Lounge of Plant Hall at the University of Tampa, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd. Tickets are $15; go to www.tostampa .org for information.

Clubs, Groups Set Holiday Events

TAMPA - Several clubs, organizations and garden groups will have December meetings or events for members and potential members. They include:

•The Parkland Garden Club and the Parkland Estates Civic Club will have their holiday dinner at 6 p.m. Sunday at the home of Nancy Curtis. The annual event encourages civic planning in the neighborhood. For information, call (813) 872-7113.

•The Davis Islands Garden Club will have a program by Bloom Nursery on plants and containers.

The meeting, which also includes information on flowers and gifts for the holidays, a plant exchange, a collection for Toys for Tots and a fashion show, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the club's garden center, 81 Columbia Drive.

•The Beach Park Garden Club's annual Christmas Auction will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Beach Park Women's Club, 801 S. West Shore Blvd.

Betty Cox is the auction chairwoman, assisted by Debra Porter. Items include baked items, plants, antiques and Christmas decorations; proceeds benefit local charities.

Mary Saad is the host and will be assisted by Szu Farrell, Virginia Knight and Claudia Medgan.

•The Sunset Park Garden Club will have a Christmas luncheon and a program on the care and feeding of Christmas plants.

The meeting will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the clubhouse, 4624 Browning Ave. Carole Page is the luncheon chairwoman. Her committee members are Dawne Balester, Peggiann Fowler, Cora Harless, Megan Kelly and Maggie McGraw.

•The Parents As Teacher's Season of Giving meeting and program will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Hyde Park United Methodist Church, 500 W. Platt St.

There will be crafts and holiday treats, and participants should bring a new unwrapped toy, valued at $10 or less, for needy children. For information, call (813) 673-4644.

The Merry Sherry Party, sponsored by the American Cancer Society's Sword of Hope, will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at the home of Regan and Alina Haines.

•United Daughters of the Confederacy, Chapter 113, will meet at 10:45 a.m. Dec. 8 in the lobby of the University of Tampa, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd.

After a business meeting, members and guests will visit the Victorian Christmas Stroll in the Henry B. Plant Museum. For information, call Gail Crosby at (813) 839-8056.

•The Tampa Republican Club's Holiday Christmas Party, including a buffet and silent auction, will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 10 at the home of Liz and Joe Wessel.
