SOUTH TAMPA - The game couldn't have been any closer: 0-0 going into the final minute.
The South Tampa Titans Jr. PeeWee Pop Warner football team was playing for a chance at the state and national championship. But the team from Jacksonville kicked a field goal as time expired in the game the day after Thanksgiving. Final score: 3-0.
"It was a very tough loss. The kids fought hard," said Scott Duvall, outgoing president of South Tampa Titans, an association of six tackle football teams, one flag football team and four cheerleading squads.
About 210 boys and girls participate. The home field is Robinson High School.
Many of the 8- to 10-year-old boys on the Jr. PeeWee team come from military families stationed at MacDill Air Force Base. The team compiled a 7-1 regular season record and had won five playoff games before the last-minute loss.
