TAMPA - Vinita Nambiar not only sells ancient Indian herbal supplements, she's also a client.
Nambiar, who along with her husband, Chandru, opened Ayovera, a herbal supplement store at 2610 W. Kennedy Blvd., said she has been taking them for about five years.
She said she experienced extreme depression after having a child and wasn't able to bounce back using traditional medicine. Instead, she started taking the supplements as part of the Ayurveda program.
She said she started feeling better almost immediately and worked to bring the supplements to America from India.
"It is a whole discipline," she said.
She said she and her husband are retailers, not practitioners, and anyone considering taking the supplements should consult a physician first.
The shop sells supplements for stress relief, menopause, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis and menstrual cramps.
"This is something that has been around for more than 5,000 years," she said. "Five thousand years and billions of people couldn't be wrong."
The shop is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Get Ego Boost At New Salon
Rachel Sanabria has been doing hair for 12 years.
It's time, she said, to branch out on her own.
Sanabria moved here from New York two years ago with her husband, a firefighter. After working at another salon, she is doing hair out of her house until her Ego Boost Salon opens.
Contractors should complete the 840-square-foot studio, 6102 S. MacDill Ave., this month, she said.
"I decided to try to do it on my own," Sanabria said. "I enjoy people. I enjoy hearing everybody's story and learning new things."
The salon will specialize in cuts and color and also offer facials and waxing, she said.
It will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Schifino Lee Settles Into New Building
After losing one of their office buildings to a May fire, the 27 employees of the Schifino Lee advertising and public relations company were cramped in temporary offices.
Last month, they moved two blocks to 511 W. Bay St., Suite 400, public relations director Stephanie Steele said. The offices take up most of the fourth floor of the building, which has a view of Bayshore Boulevard.
"It is really a modern office," Steele said. "It's something we are all so proud of."
They moved the first week of November and are waiting for permanent furniture to arrive, she said.
The fire started in an air conditioning unit behind one of the buildings at 701 W. Bay St. Steele said it was a freak accident.
"What is interesting is that back then we were kind of prepared for acts of God, natural disasters," she said. "Our server room got fried, but we had everything backed up. We only lost about a half a day's work."
