TAMPA - Michael Murphy Gallery M presents an exhibit of 20 oil paintings and prints by internationally known artist Tomasz Rut in an exhibit called "Amore Appassionato," running Saturday through Dec. 10.
Considered a classical painter, Rut was inspired by the Baroque and Renaissance masters. Born in Poland, he studied in Warsaw before finishing his studies in New York City.
His paintings juxtapose past with present, giving them a classical, romantic feel. The past is recalled in muted backgrounds and low-key colors reminiscent of Italian frescoes, but the contemporary images place them firmly in the present.
Meet Rut and see his works at the free opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the gallery, 2701 S. MacDill Ave.

Wood Carver Exhibits In Ybor
Hillsborough Community College Ybor Campus Art Gallery presents traditional devotional wood sculptures by master woodcarver Maria Chiriboga from Thursday through Dec. 8.
A native of Quito, Ecuador, Chiriboga is a professional curator, restorer and conservator of traditional Latin American art. Her works are held by the Vatican and museums worldwide.
"Quito is known for its traditional religious wood carvings, and the schools there teach it. So Chiriboga went right into those schools as a child," gallery director Carolyn Kossar said. "It's at least a 400-year-old tradition in the way they carve the pieces, in the way they depict different figures, like the archangel and virgins, in the paints they use and the woods they choose."
Meet Chiriboga and see her work from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the free opening reception, which includes a talk by the artist at 7 p.m.
The gallery is at Palm Avenue and 15th Street. Call Kossar at (813) 253-7674 for information.

Ikebana, Paintings Featured At Gallery
Bleu Acier, a studio and gallery in Tampa Heights, focuses on two artists in two exhibits running Friday through Dec. 29.
Marie Yoho Dorsey, a longtime practitioner of ikebana, the Japanese art of arranging flowers in rhythmic designs, takes her art into the realm of printmaking with the exhibit "Tales from Japan and Other Stories."
Working with master printer and Bleu Acier owner Erika Greenberg-Schneider, Dorsey takes her feel for form into direct gravure, adding texture to the image with embroidery and sewing. Three of the new direct gravures are images that hearken back to traditional Japanese folk tales.
In conjunction with Arte 2007, Miami-based artist Claudia Scalise also is showcased in the gallery, with works from her ongoing series "Petits Fours," in which she paints people she knows and objects she collects.
The small scale of Scalise's images suggests Mexican milagros, religious charms said to bring health and well-being.
Both shows open with a free reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at the gallery, 109 W. Columbus Drive. Elsa Valbuena and her dance company, Gaudere Danza, will perform at 8 p.m.
Call the gallery at (813) 272-9746 for information.
