WEST TAMPA - The Hillsborough Planning Commission this week approved a land-use change that would allow homes and businesses on the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory property.
The 10-acre site's current land use allows for government and public uses such as schools, universities, hospitals and airports.
The commission voted unanimously Monday night, with little discussion, to approve its staff's recommendation.
The city council will vote on the land-use proposal when it meets at 5 p.m. Nov. 29.
In January, the council will vote on rezoning the property, 522 N. Howard Ave.
The property is owned by the state's Department of Military Affairs Armory Board. In July, the Armory Board signed a contract with Heritage Square at the Armory, which proposes a $93 million project that includes a hotel, farmers market, restaurants, cafes and a museum.
The 1941 armory building was a popular spot for dances, concerts and professional wrestling matches, including appearances by Elvis Presley, President Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Florida National Guard moved most of its operations from the armory site to Pinellas Park in 2005. The developer must relocate the remaining Guard staff.
The council also must vote on relinquishing a reverter clause that would return most of the property to the city if it isn't used for government or military purposes.
