•Retired Brig. Gen. John Gary will lead the six-week class 'Between Iraq and a Hard Place, Extended,' which begins Oct. 30 as part of the Learning in Retirement program. Registration is $40 and available by calling (813) 974-5166.
High School Gala Draws Hundreds
WEST SHORE - Several hundred parents, alumni and supporters of Tampa Catholic High School attended the school's first Cross & Shield Gala celebration Oct. 6, which had the theme A Tribute to Tampa.
The event, at Higgins Hall at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, raised money for the school's athletic campaign, the purchase of classroom equipment and an endowment fund for needy students.
Donna Taylor, a parent, served as the executive chairwoman; Monsignor Laurence Higgins, former football coach Fran Curci and former Tampa Tribune sports editor Tom McEwen were the corporate sponsorship chairmen.
Auction items included: a basketball signed by the University of Florida championship team that sold for $5,000; a road trip with the Tampa Bay Lightning that went for $6,600; and a trip to New York to see Broadway plays that brought $3,600.
Several members of the school's consultative board, including chairman Craig Latimer, also attended.
Committee Named For TGH Foundation
DAVIS ISLANDS - The Tampa General Hospital Foundation's executive committee was named recently.
The members are: Phil Dingle, chairman; Cleveland A. McInnis, vice chairman; Arthur Savage, secretary; Richard L. Kouwe, treasurer; Carter McCain, assistant treasurer; and McIver Berner, Stephen G. Brantley and Henry Gonzalez III, members at large.
The foundation's new board of trustee members are Mary Jane Campbell, Richard Dobkin, John Leone and Holly Tomlin.
Events Benefit The Spring
SOUTH TAMPA - Two events next week focus on The Spring, which assists domestic violence victims.
•The Spring Daytime Auxiliary will meet at noon Monday at The Spring Vintage Boutique, 3418 Swann Ave.
The boutique, which opened in 2005, raises money for The Spring and promotes community awareness. Auxiliary members will model clothes, and lunch will be served.
•The 17th annual Gift of Peace Breakfast will be held Wednesday at the Hyatt Regency, 2 Tampa City Center.
Registration is at 7 a.m., and the program begins at 7:30 a.m. The cost is $50. For reservations, call (813) 247-5433.
EPC Director Guest At Lunch
YBOR CITY - Rick Garrity, director of the county's Environmental Protection Commission, will discuss wetlands at a Hot Topic luncheon Wednesday sponsored by the League of Women Voters.
The event will be at noon at the Lion's Eye Institute, 1410 N. 21st St.

Fall Festival Benefits Center
WEST TAMPA - Kathy's Place, A Center for Grieving Children, will host a fall festival from 2 to 7 p.m. Oct. 21 at Al Lopez Park, 4811 N. Himes Ave.
There will be games, prizes, children's activities, a firetruck and refreshments. Proceeds will benefit the agency, which opened in 2003 to provide free support for children and families who have lost loved ones.

Benefit Event Has Pirate Theme
YBOR CITY - Gaspar's Grotto, 1805 E. Seventh Ave., will host the pirate-themed Feast of the Dark to raise money for the Tampa Historical Society.
The event will be from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Friday and includes music by Southern rock band Rebel Pride, food, a silent auction, games and a costume contest.

Plant Societies Plan Programs
SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - Two plant societies meet next week at the Seminole Garden Center, 5800 N. Central Ave. The free meetings are open to the public.
•Ken Roberts will discuss becoming an American Orchid Society judge when the Tampa Bay Orchid Society meets at 7 p.m. Thursday. The event includes a members' plant sale. For information, call (727) 772-8535.

13 Ugly Men To Be Honored
SOUTH TAMPA - Voices for Children will recognize The 13 Ugly Men with the annual Champion for Children award.
The presentation will be part of a party at 7 p.m. Friday at the Renaissance Hotel in International Plaza. The theme is 13 Card Stud.
The 13 Ugly Men plans parties to benefit charities. Voices for Children supports the Guardian ad Litem program, which advocates for children in the family court system.

The 13 Ugly Men also is planning its 10th annual Freakshow at 8 p.m. Oct. 26 at Club Underground, 802 E. Whiting St. Costumes are required for the party, which benefits A Gift for Adoption.
