TAMPA - The annual art extravaganza known as Gala Corina is about to take off.
For one week beginning Friday, more than 150 mostly local artists will present visual, performing and fashion arts in a show called 'iluminacion.'
'We hope this year's show will illuminate the arts in Tampa Bay and illuminate the necessity for local artists,' said Amy Kroslak, president of Gala Corina and event organizer.
The lineup includes several families of artists; the Kroslak family is represented by three generations.
'There's my father-in-law, Andre Kroslak, my mother-in-law, Tina Kroslak, my husband, Francesco Kroslak, and my 2½-year-old son, Alex,' Amy Kroslak said.
Alex, who makes acrylic-on-canvas paintings, learned by watching his grandfather and father paint.
'His style actually mixes that of his grandfather and father,' Amy Kroslak said.
Another twist to the show is an installation called 'Decoy.' It's a 12-foot-long boat by artist George Byers built with recycled lumber and assembled on site during the exhibition.
Known for the quality as well as the variety of the art, Gala Corina provides exposure for established and emerging artists. That adds up to a viewer experience that can run the gamut from breathtaking and awe-inspiring to puzzling and shocking.
Every year, the Gala Corina board looks for an unused historical building for the show. This year's venue, donated by Zerep Enterprises, is a one-story, white, warehouse-style building at 3965 W. Henderson Blvd., near Neptune Street and Grady Avenue in South Tampa.
Gala Corina's name pays tribute to the show's first venue in 1999, the old Corina Cigar Factory in Palmetto Beach.
The opening reception is from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday; a $5 donation is suggested. A closing sale will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight Nov. 9.
Show hours vary. For information, go to www.gala corina2007.org.
