SOUTH TAMPA - Local nonprofit organizations are sponsoring events to raise money and awareness in the next month, including:
•The Community Breakfast to support The Boys Initiative - Tampa Bay. The event, featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Leonard Pitts Jr., will be at 7:30 a.m. Friday at the Tampa Doubletree Hotel.

•The Fall Fling, benefiting the YMCA's Building Strong Kids Campaign to provide program scholarships, will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Rick's on the River, 2305 N. Willow Ave.
Sponsored by the Bob Gilbertson Central City Family YMCA, the fundraiser will include music from the 1950s and '60s, and guests are encouraged to wear clothes of the era.

•The Child Abuse Council's fifth annual Champions for Children Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 25 at Raymond James Stadium will feature author Dave Pelzer as the speaker.

•The Tampa Chapter of Ducks Unlimited Banquet will be at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at Higgins Hall, 5225 N. Himes Ave.
There will be cocktails, dinner and live and silent auctions. Chapter officers organizing the event are Mike Gruendel, Jack Norton, Norman Chastain, John Beach and Mike Conigliaro.

The third annual Teal Triumphs Over Ovarian Cancer will benefit Overcome, an ovarian cancer advocacy and support group.
The dinner, set for 5:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club, 1601 S. MacDill Ave., will feature speakers Rebecca Sutphen of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute and Monsignor Laurence Higgins. Mayor Pam Iorio is scheduled to deliver a greeting.

•The 20th annual Inaugural Gala, sponsored by the Tampa Hispanic Heritage, will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Hyatt Regency Tampa.

•The seventh annual National Hispanic Scientist of the Year Award will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Museum of Science & Industry, 4801 E. Fowler Ave.
Louis A. Martin-Vega, dean of the engineering college at the University of North Carolina, will be honored at the black-tie optional event. Martin-Vega is the first Hispanic to be named president of the Institute of Industrial Engineers.

•The inaugural Cross & Shield, a dinner and dance to benefit Tampa Catholic High School's Come Home to Rome capital campaign, will be at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at Higgins Hall, 5225 N. Himes Ave.
Bobby & the Rockets will perform, and there will be an auction. The theme is 'A Tribute to Tampa.' Donna Taylor is the executive chairwoman; corporate sponsor chairpersons are Monsignor Laurence Higgins, Fran Curci and Tom McEwen.
Tickets are $125, with patron sponsorships from $500 to $5,000.

Village Music Series To Benefit Hospital
HYDE PARK - The Hyde Park Village Live Music Series from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 26 features the Nate Najar Trio, which plays classical guitar, jazz, blues and Brazilian styles.
The free event will be at 742 S. Village Circle. Proceeds from beer sales will benefit the Tampa General Hospital Foundation, which has designated the money for the hospital's Healing Garden project.
LifePath Hospice Offers Retreat
BRANDON - An adult bereavement retreat, Journey of Hope, will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 29 at Rotary's Camp Florida in Brandon.
The retreat, sponsored by LifePath Hospice, will help survivors understand feelings of grief and loss. The fee is on a sliding scale and includes a continental breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack.

Groups To Meet At Seminole Garden Center
SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - The Seminole Garden Center, 5800 N. Central Ave., will play host to two groups next week:
•The Tampa Bay Orchid Society's meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday will feature Robert Hague, owner of Venice Orchids.
Hague will discuss specimen plants and potting and will have orchids for sale. The free event is open to members and guests. For information, call (727) 772-8535.
•The Tampa African Violet Society's meeting at 10 a.m. Friday will feature judge and grower Nancy Kast, who will present 'How To Select African Violet Show Plants.'

Cancer Survivors To Speak At Conference
DOWNTOWN - Two authors who are cancer survivors will speak at a breast cancer education conference Sept. 29.
The event, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Tampa, is sponsored by the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute.
Wendy Harpham is the author of 'Happiness in a Storm: Facing Illness and Embracing Life as a Healthy Survivor,' and Geralyn Lucas is the author of 'Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy.'
The fee is $25, and registration is needed by Friday by calling (813) 745-4988.
Clubs Kick Off 2007-08 Activities
TAMPA - Three groups start their 2007-08 club year next week:
•The University of South Florida Women's Club will have a free reception for members and potential members from noon to 2 p.m. Monday in Traditions Hall in the Sam and Martha Gibbons Alumni Center on the USF campus.
The event will include refreshments and registration for activities such as book discussion groups, bridge group, lunch bunch and a cooking group. President Carol Jones will greet guests.

•The Sunset Park Garden Club starts its 79th year with a Membership Coffee from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at its center, 4624 Browning Ave.
Club officers will greet guests, who can browse scrapbooks and photo albums. Officers are: Peggiann Fowler, president; Jennifer Holmberg, vice president; Maryse Beaudry, recording secretary; Jayne Smith, treasurer; and Ellen Eikman, corresponding secretary.

•The Beach Park Women's Club will have a 'Get Reacquainted Social' and installation luncheon Friday at its clubhouse, 801 S. West Shore Blvd.

Golf Tournament Benefits Council
SOUTH TAMPA - The first Lennar Golf Outing raised more than $9,000 for the Child Abuse Council.
The event, which also featured a silent auction, honored the council's 30th anniversary. Seventy golfers participated in the tournament at River Strand Golf and Country Club in Bradenton.
Michael Southward is president of Lennar Tampa South.
