2 Perfect Games, And 2 Near Misses

Published: September 19, 2007

Standing on the approach with the first 11 strikes back in the pit in the opening game of a three-game series has become fairly commonplace, what with fresh oil and the legs and arms in the warming-up stage.

Then the third game arrives and alterations begin to take place.

Movement of feet, changing of ball speed and arrows usually takes their toll.

Not at Pin Chasers Veterans, at least during the opening session of the new winter season.

Five Veterans' keglers sought perfection and four of them waited until the finale.

David Freedman, in the Hits and Misses Mixed League, and Randy Barnwell, in the All-Stars Mixed League, achieved third-game perfection. Ron Howard, in that same All-Stars Mixed League, and Matt Beard, in the Dave Olm Pro Shop Four Aces League, fell one pin short, also in the third game.

Steve King, in the Four Aces Men's League, shot 299 in his second game.

Freedman posted games of 188 and 182 on Lanes 1 and 2 before adjusting to the oily conditions on Lane 2 and dry conditions on Lane 1. It was his first perfect game. The 300 gave him a 670 series.

Barnwell, after a 157 middle game, switched to a Storm Big Hit, a ball that 'doesn't hook as much' and hit the 1-3 pocket solid. It was his second 300. His opening game of 225 gave him a 682 series.

Howard left the 4-pin on his 12{+t}{+h} ball, where 'I pulled it and it went high. I kept leaving the 9 pin in the first two games, so I squeezed the thumb a little bit and it worked.' Howard has one 300. He opened his series with games of 210 and 196 for a 705 series.

Beard also looked at the nasty 4-pin on his 12{+t}{+h} toss. Games of 231 and 193 preceded the 299, where 'I was using the Columbia Rock. I changed to the Columbia Pulse and it worked.'

Beard has three 300s and 10 games of 299. Opening games of 231 and 193 produced a 723 series.

King, a lefty, left the 6-pin on his final attempt when 'I came in a little bit higher than I wanted to.' The first 11 strikes, however, were right in the 1-2 pocket. He posted other games of 203 and 233 for a 735.

AMF UNIVERSITY LANES: Don Marsee's 647 and Terry Cooper's 256 paced the men last week.

Other good scores for the men were Matt McBride 236-636, Cooper 635, Marsee 237 and Shawn Lampinen 232-631. Nanette Quire led the women in high game with 186, while Tonya Smiley was the series leader with 503. Other scores for the women were Lorraine Agusti 185-466, Quire 464 and Smiley 170.

PIN POINTS: Joyce Bragg is proud of the 156 league average she posted last year at Oakfield Lanes. So when the 2007-08 winter league season commenced last week in the Oakfield Sunshine State Federal League, Joyce decided to 'average' things out. She bowled her first 600 series, a 604, and now has to live up to that even-prouder 201 average. ... Don't forget the 'Garcia Pass It On Foundation' first Charity Bowling Event at Splitsville on Channelside Drive on Oct. 15. Tickets are $100 a person.
