YBOR CITY - Gangsters, bloody murders and gruesome trolley accidents are a few of the events Maureen Patrick weaves into haunting stories on her Ybor City walking ghost tour.
'It's a very dirty town,' said Patrick, Tampa Historical Society president. 'A dirty secret.'
On Thursday, she will team up with the GFWC Tampa Junior Woman's Club for 'Secret Ybor: Scandals, Crimes and Shady Ladies,' with proceeds from tour ticket sales benefiting projects for the club, associated with the General Federation of Women's Clubs.
'This is a brand new fundraiser for us,' said fundraising chairwoman Joy Jones, who has attended the tour and saw an opportunity to mix fun with philanthropy.
During the past eight years, the club has given more than $10,000 in scholarships to high school seniors and continuing-education students.
The club's projects include supporting Hillsborough County Children's Services, celebrating the work of Tampa Fire Rescue with gifts of baked goods during October's Fire Prevention Month and decorating a family waiting room at the Tampa Police Department's Sex Crimes and Family Violence unit.
