SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - The city council has given initial approval to a beer and wine license for a proposed sports bar on Nebraska Avenue.
Owner and developer Greg Smith won council approval in February to rezone the vacant lot at 6401 N. Nebraska Ave. The approximately 2,800-square-foot restaurant will have indoor seating for 100 and outdoor seating for 18.
'I'll have televisions to show all the sports events,' said Smith, who needed a waiver for the alcohol license because the eatery will be within 1,000 feet of residences.
At least one resident spoke against the rezoning in February, objecting to the loss of green space, but no one spoke in opposition at the wet-zone hearing Thursday.
Smith has the support of the Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Association.
Association member Susan Long said the group has worked with Smith for nearly two years as he developed his plans.
'The whole association is in favor of it,' Long said.
A rear slice of the lot will remain residentially zoned, and Smith said he plans to build his home there.
A final council hearing on the alcohol license is set for Oct. 4.
