Proposed Condo Site For Sale

Published: September 26, 2007

TAMPA - A Pinellas County-based developer is selling a vacant South Tampa property approved for condominiums and town houses.

The Paradise Development Group wants $7 million for the 1.9-acre site, two blocks north of Gorrie Elementary at Azeele Street and South Boulevard, real estate agent Kevin Platt said.

Paradise planned to build 65 condos and town houses on the land, which was formerly occupied by Dianon Systems.

In 2005, the city's Architectural Review Commission approved the project, called Verano. Nothing happened with the property for more than a year, so it required approval again.

The commission again approved the project this year.

Paradise officials could not be reached for comment.

Sports 4 Girls Opens On Dale Mabry

When the Fresh Market renovated its building on Henderson Boulevard, Susan Carey kept her Sports 4 Girls store there.

Even though the store survived the months of dust and debris, Carey decided it needed to be bigger. The lease expired, and she moved the store to 4045 S. Dale Mabry Highway.

The 6,000-square-foot store features girls apparel and accessories for cheerleading, dance, gymnastics, volleyball, lacrosse, swimming, softball, soccer and more.

'It really is for girls of all ages,' Carey said. 'We start at size toddler and go up to plus sizes.

'We carry some unusual things,' she said. 'We have boxing gloves in pink, things like that. Where do you go to find boxing gloves?'

There's also some boys clothing.

'We are still unpacking,' she said. 'I never moved a business before. It's a huge job to move a business.'

The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Pei Wei Asian Diner Replaces Fred Fleming's

PF Chang's has brought a new quick casual restaurant to South Tampa.

Pei Wei Asian Diner, 217 S. Dale Mabry Highway, opened recently, part of the redevelopment of the Fred Fleming's Famous Bar-B-Que site. The property also will house an Alltel store and Drexel Heritage Furniture store.

At Pei Wei, customers can order from five Asian cuisines, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese. Orders are taken at a counter, and the food is brought to the tables.

'There is a lot of energy,' spokesman Jason Miller said. 'You can hear the woks clinging in the background. You can smell the food. You can see the cooks cooking. It is a great place for a quick lunch or quick dinner.'

Menu items range from $3 to $9, he said. There's a limited selection of beer and wine.

Pei Wei's other Tampa location is in Carrollwood.

'We think Tampa is a growing market,' Miller said. 'It is a very affluent market. It is very casual. It is where people like to go out to eat.'

Pei Wei is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
