For Tony Brooks, it was simply a mental case of putting aside what his wife had been going through since being hospitalized Jan. 28.
For Lucy Sandelin, it was mentally preparing herself to compete against some of the best bowlers in the world.
Two Tampa residents, one an established star in the Tampa Bay area for years and the other just continuing to make a name for himself, could walk away next month with national honors.
Sandelin, winner of the USBC Senior Queens last year, is among 16 champions of 2007 USBC events who will compete in bowling's Clash of Champions, May 7-8 in Kansas City, Mo. Prize fund is $100,000.
She will be competing against such established professional stars as Kelly Kulick, Liz Johnson, Wendy McPherson and Lynda Barnes. The finals will be aired on CBS May 10 (5-6 p.m .) and on May 11 (4-5 p.m.)
Brooks just returned from Memphis, where he won the National Bowling Association's Southern Region Bill Rhodman singles classic, defeating Atlanta's Gregg Black Jr. in the championship, 278-248. En route, he fired a tournament-record four-game series of 1,121 (300, 290, 255 and 276) and a 16-game total of 3,883 (242.6 average). He now will travel to Reno, Nev., on May 28 to roll against winners of the Central, Eastern and Western Regions.
"Our baby boy Ty Aaron was born April 12, but my wife has been hospitalized since January," said Brooks. "I just had to put that out of my mind and concentrate on my bowling."
