SOUTH TAMPA - When we invited readers to submit their favorite photographs for our Best of South Tampa photo contest, some couldn't wait to share their favorite local spots.
For Robert Wong, 26, of Hyde Park, the great views and location brought him to Tampa from St. Louis about two months ago.
"My favorite thing is being near the water and palm trees," Wong wrote in an e-mail.
Memories of growing up in South Tampa make the place special for Joseph Eustace Jr., 51, of Virginia Park. As a boy, he would head to Dairy Joy on Manhattan Avenue when classes let out at then-Madison Junior High School or when Mass ended at St. Patrick Catholic Church.
"One of the interesting things about South Tampa is the ability to go to places that have been around forever, where you feel comfortable," Eustace wrote.
Readers' snapshots ranged from a ride at the Christ the King parish carnival and Gasparilla fanfare to the idyllic scenes of Picnic Island and South Tampa sunsets.
The contest winner, chosen at random, is Don Legler of Ballast Point for his photo of Ballast Point Pier. Legler will receive two beach chairs and a cooler from The Tampa Tribune.
