TAMPA - The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of South Florida plans an open house to showcase its programs and study groups.

The free event will be at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 9 at the USF Downtown Center, 1101 Channelside Drive. There will be refreshments and social time until 10 a.m., when the presentation begins.

The fee-based institute for older adults focuses on programs in the humanities and computer training. Courses include "German, French and Italian Opera," "The Life and Times of Harry Truman" and "Oceanography at The Florida Aquarium." For course listings, go to www.usfseniors .org.

Courses are offered several South Tampa venues, including The Florida Aquarium, the Tampa Museum of Art, the Tampa Woman's Club and the USF Downtown Center.

Escape To The Tropics To Help Krewe Member

The Bonney-Read Krewe will sponsor Escape to the Tropics to help a founding krewe member who is fighting cancer.

The event, featuring music by the Moneypenny Band, food, games and an auction, will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Zendah Grotto, 4202 W. Ohio St.

Proceeds will benefit Carolyn Faulkner, who is receiving treatment at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center.

Volunteers Needed For Cattle Barons' Ball

SOUTH The executive committee of the American Cancer Society's Cattle Barons' Ball will have a roundup of volunteers for various committees.

The free event will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at Walker Brands, 1810 W. Kennedy Blvd.

The executive committee members are Judy Genshaft and Steve Greenbaum, 2009 honorary co-chairmen; Jeanne Marget, 2009 Cattle Barons' Ball committee chairman; Pam and Les Muma, 2008 honorary co-chairmen; Rhea Law and Wayne Williams, 2007 honorary co-chairmen; Sam and Terri Ellison, 2006 honorary co-chairmen; Mel Tockman, 2009 American Cancer Society operating board chairman; Jami Hess, 2007 Cattle Barons' Ball chairwoman; Debra Weisser, 2004 Cattle Barons' Ball chairwoman; Sandy Juster, 2002 Cattle Barons' Ball chairwoman; and Gloria Giunta, Cattle Barons' Ball founder and ambassador.

Luncheon Benefits Learning Centers

WEST Seven community leaders will receive the Handprint Award when The Learning Centers hosts the Back-to-School Luncheon.

The event, benefiting the preschools' scholarship fund, will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at Higgins Hall, 5224 N. Himes Ave.

Award recipients are Don and Bretta Sullivan, Anne and Drew Pittman, Tready and Thayer Smith, and Tom Arthur.

The preschools are at St. John Presbyterian Church, 4110 N. MacDill Ave., and John Calvin Presbyterian Church, 6501 N. Nebraska Ave.
