Published: August 27, 2008

TAMPA - New York-based artist Bob Wysocki will create an unusual site-specific installation in the gallery space called Flight 19 in the baggage claim building at the historical Union Station.

An acclaimed sculptor, he plans to use electric fans and 100,000 pounds of pristine sand from a Central Florida dune to demonstrate the reforming properties of wind on sand.

The man-made dune will change shape, imitating naturally occurring shifting sands and giving visitors a different visual experience each time they look.

It's not the first time Wysocki, who teaches at the University of Syracuse in New York, has hauled in sand for an exhibit. He took 10,000 pounds of sand from the Mojave Desert for a similar installation in Los Angeles.

Called "Post-Metal," his latest sand exhibit is produced in conjunction with "MashUp," an exhibit running through Oct. 4 at the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum.

"MashUp" is billed on the USF Web site as "a group exhibition that traces the history of destruction as a creative force in visual art, and its resonance in the mass culture realm of popular music." The exhibit includes art and artifacts from the 1960s to the present.

The free opening reception for "Post-Metal" is from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Flight 19, 1004 E. Twiggs St. The exhibit continues through November. For information, go to www.experimental
