Annual Santa Stop Sunday

Published: December 3, 2008

VIRGINIA PARK - Yes, Virginia Park, there is a Santa Claus.

He will drop by Sunday to collect gifts in the fifth annual Santa Stop.

"Everyone on this route loves this project," said Alex Plante, 15, a Plant High sophomore. "This is a way to show the kids how we experience Christmas."

Plante is one of six from Girl Scout Troop 82 who are hosting this year's Santa Stop, a community service project that has alternated hosts among Virginia Park scouts.

On Sunday, Santa will ride an illuminated sleigh along Grady and Clark avenues collecting gifts at about 30 intersections between West Palmira Avenue and West El Prado Boulevard.

It is the final requirement for the girls to earn the highest award in Girl Scouting, the Gold Award. Including Plante, Savannah Carpenter, Lindsey Hahn, Lizzy Morales, Sara Pressley and Meredith Connelly are sophomores and have been in scouting together since kindergarten. Carpenter and Hahn attend the Academy of the Holy Names. The others go to Plant High.

"It's a good way to make an impact on the community," Plante said.

The gifts will go to children from Egypt Lake Elementary, Hillsborough County's Weed and Seed program and the Redlands Christian Migrant Association.

Plante said in spite of the slow economy, they are hoping to collect about 1,000 games, dolls and toys for all ages. Kathy Paskert has had two sons lead the Santa Stop and said the project exemplifies the scouting motto.

"Scouting is not just about learning leadership and outdoor skills," Paskert said. "It's about serving the community and helping others."
