TAMPA HEIGHTS - Residents of this historic neighborhood adjacent to downtown and the Hillsborough River want to showcase their urban community and give back to people in need during the holidays.
The Tampa Heights Stewardship Team is hosting a holiday festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Water Works Park, 1710 N. Highland Ave. The event is open to the public.
The event will include a visit from Santa Claus, who plans to arrive in a convoy of vintage Corvettes. There will be bands, entertainers, food vendors and health, financial and housing counselors.
The event will offer canoe, kayak and boat rides.
The Tampa Heights Stewardship Team is made up of community volunteers whose goal is to implement the Tampa Heights Neighborhood Plan, which the Tampa City Council approved five years ago. An annual festival is part of the neighborhood plan, said Lena Young-Green, a Tampa Heights resident and stewardship team member.
Organizations including the Bay Area Brotherhood Club, an organization of active and retired military men and women from MacDill Air Force Base, and the NFL Alumni Tampa Bay Chapter are among organizations that have helped the neighborhood.
The organizations will give gifts to 250 children who have been selected from the Tampa Heights community.
"We are excited about it," Young-Green said. "We are glad to be able to have an opportunity to start what we expect to become an annual festival."
