YBOR CITY - A celebration of the Santa Lucia Festival of Light will take place Saturday at the Italian Club, 1731 E. Seventh Ave.
Saint Lucy or Santa Lucia was a young girl of Sicilian origin who lived about 300 years after Christ. At a young age her Christianity made her a target of anti-Christian sentiment. She was blinded and executed. Lucy now is associated with both light in the darkness and sight. The festival of Santa Lucia celebrates the light brought to one of the darkest days of the year, just as Lucy's faith shown in a dark period for early Christians.
Monsignor Laurence Higgins will celebrate Mass at 11 a.m., a traditional program and the passing of the "Crown of Lights" to the coming year's Santa Lucia. This year's winner, Jacqueline Stine, will present the award.
The crown bearer, who must be 13 years old, will read from an essay explaining why she wanted the role. She will receive a $100 savings bond.
A children's procession will follow, along with music, dancing and food in the ballroom.
Tickets are $15 for ages 13 and older; $7.50 for ages 3 to 12; and free for children 3 and younger.
For tickets call Katie Miliziano at (813) 265-0001.
The Italian Club also will sponsor its holiday party and new members' reception at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Canned goods donations will be collected for those in need.
