Tampa Palms Women's Club Donates Money To Agencies

Published: December 17, 2008

TAMPA - A Seminole Heights agency for former women inmates and a Sulphur Springs center for children were among eight recipients of money from the Tampa Palms Women's Club.

Hillsborough House of Hope, which helps women coming out of incarceration, was the only first-time recipient. Linda Walker, the agency's program manager, accepted the check and said the organization appreciates the money and a recent donation of clothes from club members.

"The ladies went through those bags like they were at the mall," she told them.

Tampa Police Officer Debbie Bowles accepted the funds for RICH House.

She said 30 to 40 children come to the house daily for after-school programs and believes the program is helping the low-income area.

"This was a neighborhood that wasn't very receptive to law enforcement before," Bowles said. "Now they aren't afraid and see us as helping them."

Bowles thanked the club for other services, too.

"You have blessed us in so many ways other than financial. You volunteer and you bring us housing goods and clothing goods," Bowles said.

The money was raised by women's club members at their Arts & Crafts Under the Palms show in October. It was presented at the group's holiday covered-dish luncheon Dec. 4 at Compton Park.

Charlotte Hogue, the club's charities chairwoman, coordinated the check presentation to the groups' representatives, who had an opportunity to tell about their programs.

Other groups receiving checks were Kids & Canines, Everyday Blessings, OASIS (Outreach Assisting Students In Schools) Network, PACE Center for Girls, God's Pedal Power and Wheels of Success. The club also provided gifts for needy students at Tampa Palms Elementary and Lawton Chiles Elementary schools.

Party Kicks Off Karamu Planning

WEST SHORE - Supporters of Lowry Park Zoo arrived in jungle print tops, skirts and dresses for the first Jungle Boogie.

The holiday kick-off event on Dec. 4 at Saks Fifth Ave. was in support of Karamu XXI, the annual springtime gala at the zoo.
Jungle Boogie was hosted by 2009 Karamu chair Kelly Feldman and the zoo's Karamu committee. Feldman served on the Karamu committee in 2007 and is active as a volunteer in many civic and community organizations.

Karamu XXI, from the Swahili word for "party," is set for April 18 in the zoo's recently opened Safari Lodge.
