WEST TAMPA - The children at the first "We Care" celebration hid their treasures from their parents' eyes.
The ornaments, wreaths, jewelry and hot-chocolate snowmen they had made and decorated at the George M. Steinbrenner Boys & Girls Club were holiday presents for their family members.
"We Care" celebration is national partnership between furniture manufacturer Geiger and Herman Miller, furniture dealer Workplace Resource and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. It began 13 years ago and is held in about 25 cities annually. The Dec. 12 event was the first celebration in Tampa.
More than 100 volunteers from local architecture and interior design firms participated. There were 11 booths for about 125 children to make the gifts. Each company or team was responsible for creating a craft; buying supplies including picture frames, glitter, stones and pipe cleaners; and arranging for volunteers.
Linda Vazmina of Workplace Resource coordinated the event.
"This was a way for architects and designers, who are very creative people, to provide arts and crafts gifts for the children to make for their families," Vazmina said.
