WEST SHORE - When about 40 zoo supporters gathered recently for a luncheon to celebrate 20 years of Lowry Park Zoo's black-tie fundraiser, Karamu, attendees were surprised with a special presentation.
Karamu co-founder Sally Lowry Baldwin received lifetime honorary membership in the Lowry Park Zoological Society's board of directors.
Catherine Lowry Straz, who hosted the Jan. 23 luncheon at her home, told Baldwin: "We love you. We love what you have done for this city and the zoo."
Baldwin is the second person to receive the honor; the first was Karamu co-founder Mason M. Lykes in 1990.
"We have several little jewels here and the zoo is one in the crown of Tampa," Straz said.
Among the guests were the Karamu 2008 chairwomen, Jessie Krusen and her daughter-in-law Elizabeth Krusen.
This year's event is April 12 at the zoo, 1101 W. Sligh Ave., and will have a Roaring Twenties theme, Jessie Krusen said. The Grand Hyatt of Tampa Bay will cater the event.
"We thought multigenerations might be a good thing to celebrate," she said.
For tickets, call the zoo at (813) 935-8552, Ext. 239.
