CHANNEL DISTRICT - Forever in their memory will be their Channel District home.
Sam Jensen proposed to Jennifer Carpenter, his girlfriend of four years, on the balcony of their penthouse at Ventana, a glass-rich condominium complex at Kennedy Boulevard and Channelside Drive.
Now the couple, who spend half their time in Westchester County, N.Y., plan to marry in August on the same balcony.
Carpenter wants the ceremony to coincide with the Friday night fireworks at Channelside.
Jensen, 44, a venture capitalist, said they scoured the condominium market in three urban neighborhoods, including Ybor City and downtown but liked the Channel District's location the best.
"We wanted to live like this," he said, relaxing on the wraparound sofa in their two-story penthouse.
They take the trolley to dinner in Ybor City and walk to Channelside. They ride their bicycles to Davis Islands where they train for upcoming triathlons.
When Carpenter, 39, sees the blue skies and feels the warmth after landing in Tampa, "Then I can relax," she said. "People here have time for you. In New York, everyone is going a mile a minute."
She moved from upstate New York in 1988 to attend the University of South Florida, where she earned an MBA and taught until 2004.
The couple moved into a two-bedroom unit at Ventana a few months ago and decided to upgrade to the 2,700-square-foot penthouse last month.
"It has a luxury feel throughout," Jensen said of Ventana, which offers concierge service.
