TAMPA - Potential volunteers for the Focus on Females third annual Women's Healthcare Symposium gathered recently to hear more about opportunities to assist with the free event.

The symposium will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 1 at Channelside Cinemas, 615 Channelside Drive.

The group Friends of Focus on Females started this year and has about 70 volunteers, said Steven L. Maskin, a local eye surgeon who founded and hosts the symposium.

"We wanted a grass-roots effort," Maskin said at the gathering Jan. 28 at Bailey's Restaurant and Catering.

He said the volunteers include former patients, former conference attendees and others. All volunteers must attend a one-hour training session.

The symposium's keynote speaker is Dottie Berger McKinnon, a former Hillsborough County commissioner and founder of Kids Charity of Tampa Bay. She is an eight-year survivor of breast cancer.

The event will feature local physicians discussing cardiac disease, cancer, nutrition, migraines, osteoporosis, diabetes, depression and other topics. Speakers include Eric Harrison, Barry Verkauf, Joel Silverfield, James Edgar and Maskin.

"I wanted stellar, quality physicians who could talk in plain English and have a desire to reach out to the community," Maskin said.

At the recruitment reception, he said the concept behind the event is "to have women learn how to take better care of themselves by improving health literacy."

He added: "If you don't go to medical school or nursing school, how are you going to learn about medical issues?"

The event also includes health screenings, fitness workshops, and exhibits by vendors and sponsors. Maskin said 200 people attended the first event, and last year's symposium drew 850 participants. Organizers expect 1,500 this year.
