Published: February 13, 2008

TAMPA - The University of Tampa welcomes Baltimore-based artist Joyce J. Scott to the campus for an exhibit and related activities.

Scott is one of those restless artists who aren't satisfied with working in one medium. She continues to sharpen her innovative approaches and skills as a sculptor, jeweler, printmaker, visual artist, installation artist, performance artist and educator.

Scott, whose mother, Elizabeth Talford Scott, was a renowned fiber artist, picked up many artistic skills as a child, including basketry, woodworking, metalworking and quilting.

Those early influences infuse her work with personality, giving a new feel to old crafts. Through her art, she expresses ideas about racism, sexism, history, politics, culture and spirituality.

Probably her most familiar signature is her use of beads. Strung together or woven into a variety of materials, they are the unifying structure of her pieces.

Scott also is a performer and singer. A DVD of one of her performances will play during the exhibit of her works at Scarfone/Hartley Gallery, 310 N. Boulevard, on the UT campus through March 6.

"She's shown all over the world," gallery director Dorothy Cowden said. "She's such a dynamite personality and performer. Onstage, she's a stand-up actor and comedienne."

Scott will give a free talk and performance at 11 a.m. Thursday in the gallery.

As visiting artist for the gallery's Studio-f, Scott will be creating monoprints on campus through Feb. 20. The finished prints will be displayed at a free open house from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Feb. 20 at Studio-f and Scarfone/Hartley Gallery, then will be made available to collectors.

Prior to the open house, Leslie King Hammond, dean of graduate studies at Maryland Institute College of Art, will present a talk titled "Issues in Art" at 1 p.m. Feb. 20.

Bay Area Art Show Names Winners

Tampa Realistic Artists has announced the winners of its first Bay Area Art Show, which drew 177 two-dimensional entries competing for prizes totaling more than $1,400.

Best of Show honors went to Michael Hanlon for his painting "The Comedian."

Among the other winners were: Gina Stark, who took first place in the acrylic and oil category for her painting "Agatha"; Kathy Durdin, whose painting "Old Jerusalem" took first place in watercolor; Richard Stark, whose "Dining Alone" won in photography; and Gail Gamble, who won in the other media category for "The Point at Honeymoon Island."

The exhibit runs through March 14 at the Old Hyde Park Art Center, 705 Swann Ave.

Add Art To Gifts For Valentine's Day

Some people think Valentine's Day is for chocolates, flowers and diamonds. A South Tampa gallery would like to add art to that list.

Through February, Hyde Park Fine Arts will host an exhibit of Valentine-themed works by regional and national artists. Called "Uncensored," the show includes works in all media, including fabric and ceramic sculpture.

"The title was chosen because there is frank nudity in some of the images," curator Catherine "Cat" Thompson said. "And also because we weren't trying to tell the artists what erotic art or Valentine art should look like."

The show's artists include Michael Crabb, John Gurbacs, Rachel Hoffman, Lauren Howard, Meghan Mitchell, Yoko Nogami, Britzel Vasquez and Wesley Wetherington.

The exhibit opens with a free reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the gallery, 1608 Snow Ave., in Hyde Park Village. Call the gallery at (813) 251-4596 for information.
