WEST TAMPA - West Tampa Elementary School second-graders welcomed the Chinese New Year recently with a parade complete with dragon dance.
The Feb. 5 event was an extension of a story in their reading series based on the holiday. Led by Dana Prosser and Susan Beran, second-grade teachers began the project to boost students' exposure to other cultures and to encourage an interest in reading.
Among other activities, the students created origami butterflies and dragon masks. Teachers and parents provided a meal of fried rice, egg rolls, and fortune and almond cookies.
