SOUTH TAMPA - More than 100 children were honored Dec. 5 during the 11th annual Kids are Heroes awards ceremony, including Hannah Douglas, a preschool student at Bayshore Christian School.
Hannah, 5, was nominated for her fundraising campaign at the school and for her efforts in raising awareness about neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer that attacks the nervous system. Hannah has been fighting the disease since she was 19 months old.
Since 1996, St. Joseph's Children's Hospital has recognized nearly 900 children ages 5 to 18 from Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk counties who have performed heroic deeds, displayed acts of selflessness or demonstrated good citizenship.
This year's winners, chosen by current and former pediatric patients of St. Joseph's, include Jazzlyn Smith of Tampa, Ainsley Basham of Lithia, Aneesha Harris of Riverview, Thomas Fiumara of New Port Richey, Brooke Murray of St. Petersburg, Zachary Bonner of Valrico, Chelsea Organ of Tampa, Richard Myers of Holiday, and Ben and Jerry Funt of Tampa.
