CHANNEL DISTRICT - The Gasparilla season is gearing up, with krewes planning parties, buying beads and checking their costumes in preparation for the Jan. 26 parade.
The lead-up activity includes:
•The Dragon Party Kickoff Event, sponsored by the Krewe of Brigadoon, at 7 p.m. today in the Velvet Room of Margarita Mamas at Channelside. It will include appetizers and drink specials; the $10 admission benefits charity.
•The fourth annual Trade Goods Social, sponsored by the Rough Riders, is at 6 p.m. Thursday, also in the Velvet Room of Margarita Mamas. Krewe members can bring beads and pins to trade.

•An All-Krewe social, sponsored by the Spirit of Cigar City in celebration of the group's first appearance in the Gasparilla Day Parade, will be at 5:30 pm. Thursday at Hattrick's, 107 N. Franklin St.

•An All-Krewe Social, sponsored by the Krewe of F Troop, will be at 6 p.m. Jan. 24 at Jackson's on Harbour Island.
•The Gasparilla Eve Annual Party, sponsored by the Rough Riders, is from 6 to 11 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Embassy Suites downtown. A buffet will be served from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and Otis and the Old School Band will perform. Tickets are $35 and available at www.tampa-roughriders.org.
Pan Am Women Making Donations
PALMA CEIA - The Pan American University Women will present $1,000 checks to four charities at its meeting Jan. 19.
The 9 a.m. breakfast event will be at the Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club, 1601 S. MacDill Ave.
Representatives from the charities will give an overview of their programs. The presenters are: Kelly Nelson of the Judeo Christian Health Clinic; Chantal Hevia of the Ybor City Museum Society; Elaine Diaz and Susie McLennan of Families of Spina Muscular Atrophy; and Mary Ann Massalio of the Children's Cancer Center.
President Nuri Ayers and President-elect Judy Blanco will present the checks. Nora Lamb is the hospitality chairwoman for the event. RoseAnne Bowers and Rose Ciccarello are the special projects co-chairwomen.
Travel In France Topic At Meeting
PALMA CEIA - The Prose, Poetry, People and Places Group of the Tampa branch of the American Association of University Women will meet at 11 a.m. today at the Charles J. Fendig Public Library, 3909 W. Neptune St.
Sherry Foecking and Maureen Kearney will present a program about traveling in France. The group will then have lunch at a nearby restaurant.

Museum Offers Opening Reception
DOWNTOWN - The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts will have an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday for two new exhibits.
The shows are "The Magic Box of Abelardo Morell" and "Panoramic Views of the Past," featuring works of the Burgert Brothers. Both will be on display until March 1.

Gesneriad Society Holds Free Meeting
WEST TAMPA - Mollie Howell will present a program on achimines at the Jan. 19 meeting of the Tampa Bay Gesneriad Society.

DANA SHORES - The Egypt Shrine will host a weekly Rock N Blues Jam beginning Jan. 20 in its Oasis Lounge, 4050 Dana Shores Drive.
