TAMPA - The Ybor City Campus Art Gallery of Hillsborough Community College presents a site-specific installation by Fort Lauderdale artist Toby Archer.
Called "Night Meditations I," the contemplative environment includes a 12-foot-square fiber-optic chamber that visitors will enter through a space designed with a Japanese garden in mind. Inside, the interactive surroundings are intended to encourage peacefulness and the freeing of the creative process.
The exhibit also includes several sculpted paper-and-neon wall pieces.
An artist and designer, Archer is known locally for her design of the wall of lights on The Pavilion at Rivergate Tower during the "Lights on Tampa" event in 2006.
She will give a slide lecture at 6:30 p.m. Thursday before the exhibit's opening reception from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the gallery in the Performing Arts Building at Palm Avenue and 15th Street. The exhibit continues through April.
In conjunction with the exhibit, a free public art symposium will be held at 6:30 p.m. today in the Performing Arts Building. Intended for all levels of artists, the symposium will cover topics ranging from finding public art opportunities to working with professionals in other areas.

Local Photographers Focus Of TECO Show
Three local photographers give their views of the world in an exhibit at the TECO Plaza Art Gallery through Feb. 28.
Steven S. Gregory, Tampa's 2006 photographer laureate, uses computer technology to add photographic elements to his final picture. He might add a particularly rich-looking sky or drop in a bicycle in the foreground. The end result is one of enhancement of reality.
Suzanne Camp Crosby, also a former photographer laureate, does her manipulating at the beginning, assembling and setting up the people and objects she wants before pushing the camera's button. This layering of elements results in a picture that is sometimes humorous and often complex as it introduces the idea of illusion into the picture.
Robert C. Sanchez uses a photojournalistic format to record richly detailed images of people and places he finds in the distant lands he visits.
