SOUTH TAMPA - The South Tampa Chamber of Commerce has named Robinson High senior Amanda Mason as its Outstanding Student of the Month for January.
In fall 2005, Mason started The Katrina Backpack Project, collecting 500 backpacks filled with books and grooming supplies to send to elementary schools in Kenner, La., one of the towns hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina.
Mason and producer Roy "Royalty" Hamilton also recorded and distributed the song "Home" to more than 5,000 families affected by hurricanes. She also established the national program Spread Your Wings to help educate teens about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.
Mason received the award at the chamber's general membership meeting Jan. 16. She was accompanied by her parents, Stephen and Wanda, and her guidance counselor, Laura Blake. Mayor Pam Iorio was the guest speaker.
