TAMPA - TAMPA - As if the road construction on Gandy Boulevard weren't bad enough, the northwest corner of Gandy and Manhattan Avenue also is humming with building projects.
Burger King appears to be nearing completion of its restaurant at 4403 W. Gandy Blvd., site of the former Egg Platter diner.
The fast-food restaurant replaces one built in 1977 at 4401 W. Gandy Blvd., at the intersection of Manhattan.
A company spokeswoman in Miami could not be reached for comment.
CVS paid $2.6 million for the corner lot in October, property records show.
A CVS spokesman in Rhode Island said construction of the 13,000-square-foot drugstore will begin in the fall, with the anticipated opening in summer 2009. The store will have drive-through service.
Sears Outlet Opens In Seminole Heights Sears Appliance Outlet has opened at 8245 N. Florida Ave. in Seminole Heights.
Appliances account for about 80 percent of the merchandise, store manager Sjoerd Roijengu said. The store also sells lawn tractors, grills, televisions, mattresses and seasonal items.
"We carry new, scratched or dented, and used merchandise returned in the other stores," Roijengu said. "The savings are 20 to 80 percent off the regular price."
Store hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. For information, call (813) 935-3693.

•EventMakers has spun off EventFest.
Darrell R. Stefany, who helped organize Tampa's annual Gasparilla festival as head of EventMakers, founded the new company to produce events throughout the Southeast, according to a release.
EventFest's first client is an old client: Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, which hosts the festival.

•College Hunks Hauling Junk, a Washington, D.C.-based franchise, has opened a Tampa operation at 4836 W. Gandy Blvd.
The operation "provides clean-cut, collegiate professional teams to haul away unwanted items from commercial or residential properties," a release states.
