Ophelia Project Programs Seek Participants NEIGHBOR NEWS

SOUTH TAMPA - The Ophelia Project - Tampa Bay is seeking applicants for the Ophelia Teen Ambassador program, which includes 60 high school girls, from all parts of Hillsborough County.

The group meets once a month, 3 to 5 p.m. Sundays, at one of three locations, including the Ophelia office, 5509 W. Gary St.

The girls discuss leadership topics and participate in community service projects, which can earn them service hours.

The program runs September through May. There will be an informational parents meeting Aug. 10 at the Ophelia office with the first Ambassadors meeting Sept. 7.

The program has a $60 fee but scholarships are available.

Democratic Women Set Luncheon

WEST SHORE - The Hillsborough Democratic Women's Club will have its annual luncheon at 11 a.m. Aug. 16 at the Hilton Tampa Airport Westshore, 2225 N. Lois Ave.

The event, moderated by President Bernadette Storck, will include a chance to meet candidates and door prizes. Tickets are $35. Checks, payable to the club, should be mailed to Pat Maloney, 12907 Lake Ventana Drive, Tampa, FL 33625.

Avery Re-elected As MDA Officer

TAMPA - Paul Avery, the chief operating officer of Tampa Based OSI Restaurant Partners, has been reelected as the national vice president of the Muscular Dystrophy Association's (MDA) board of directors.

The election was during the association's July 11 meeting in Los Angeles.

MDA has 225 clinics nationwide, including the Children's Hospital at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa.

Zoo's Beer Tasting Is Saturday

TAMPA - The 13th annual Wazoo will be 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday at Lowry Park Zoo, 1101 W. Sligh Ave.

The event, with more than 200 beverages and food samples from local restaurants, also features music by Box for Pee Wee and The Paper Stanleys.

Annual Networking Night Planned

WEST TAMPA - The Tampa chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction will host its third annual Networking Night, where businesses can present products and services.

The event will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida Conference Facility, 5002 W. Lemon St.

Founded in 1960, the chapter hosts monthly meetings and participates in charity projects. It also offers scholarships for students interested in the construction field.

The exhibiting fee is $50 which includes a meal ticket; attendee tickets are $22.50, if purchased by Monday.
