SOUTH TAMPA - Plant High School senior Manuela Munoz Alvarez is the recipient of the South Tampa Chamber of Commerce's Outstanding Student of the Month Award for May. The award was presented May 21 at the chamber's luncheon at the Centre Club, which was sponsored by Tbay Tutoring.
Alvarez's family arrived in the United States from Colombia in 2000, and she began learning English while attending Wilson Middle School, where she was elected Student Advisory Committee president. In high school, she has served on several community organizations, including the Mayor's Youth Corps, Community Tampa Bay, Hillsborough Youth Collaborative and the Children's Board of Hillsborough County.
The Children's Board recently awarded her the Youth Who Made a Difference Award.
She has been awarded a scholarship to Furman University in Greenville, S.C., where she will major in education.
