EAST TAMPA - The pool is ready except for the ribbon-cutting Tuesday.
The city's $1.5 million remodeling project elevated the pool at Cyrus Greene Park, added a handicap accessibility ramp, a slide, rain arches and a splash pad. There will be six swim lanes and there are plans for swim league competitions.
Closed for nearly four years, the reopening of the pool, 2101 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., has been eagerly awaited by residents.
"They've been coming and inquiring," pool director Diedrea Anthony said. "It's well-needed and well-wanted."
The park's community center opened in 2006, replacing one demolished in 2001 when the College Hill and Ponce de Leon public housing complexes were torn down.
In place of those complexes, the Tampa Housing Authority built Belmont Heights Estates, a mix of public and market-rate housing along North 22nd Street and Lake Avenue.
The center serves about 150 children in after-school programs. During the summer, they can sign up for arts and crafts, reading programs, nature classes, dance, field trips, sports and free lunches.
