INTERBAY - Accolades for accomplishments and anticipation for more highlighted the recent Red Cross Angels luncheon at the Tampa Yacht & Country Club.

The Angels is a women's auxiliary support organization for the Tampa Bay Chapter of the American Red Cross. The 25-year-old group has been rebuilt since late last year with new members and projects, including a kickoff coffee in September at the home of Al and Bev Austin.

At the luncheon, Bev Austin, who served as president, was recognized with a special pin presented by Anna Trefethen, the chapter's chief executive officer.

Following the presentation, member Betty Wood took an opportunity to praise Austin.

"Didn't I get an urgent call last year that the group was defunct?" Wood told about 70 guests.

She said she was happy to see the revitalization.

"And we know who did it," Wood said, pointing at Austin and leading a standing ovation.

Mary Jane Martinez, who served as vice president, was recognized as Angel of the Year and received a bracelet.

"She is a great angel and a fabulous friend," Austin said. "She started the year by raising funds and giving of her own."

The Angels presented Trefethen with a check for $165,000, most of it raised by a dinner coordinated by Martinez and others. It will be used for local relief efforts.

"Because of what this group does in the Tampa Bay area, no one will be alone in a disaster," Trefethen said.

Officers for 2008-09 also were installed at the luncheon, which was coordinated by Paula Wilson.

The officers are Maureen Rorech Dunkel, president; Allison Tutwiler, vice president; Susan Grady, recording secretary; Amy Guagliardo, corresponding secretary; and Denise Chavez, treasurer.

Dunkel told the guests that "the biggest shoes in the world to fill must be Bev Austin's. I take legacies very seriously."

She said the new board hopes to build on the successes and reach other areas of the community to expand membership, which now is primarily from South Tampa.
