SULPHUR SPRINGS - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay and Fifth Third Bank teamed up recently to recognize Sulphur Springs Elementary School students who made great efforts to improve their grades.
The students are part of a mentoring initiative through Big Brothers Big Sisters. Volunteers spend an hour a week with the youngsters, helping with homework and other activities.
Guidance counselor Haven Felker selected fourth-graders who improved academically and socially. The students took a limousine ride to Fifth Third Bank on Kennedy Boulevard, learned how to write checks and heard from bank President Brian Keenan on the importance of math. The youngsters also received gifts and a $50 savings bond.
