TAMPA - As the weather gets warmer and people head out of state or to the beaches for the summer, local garden clubs wind down their club year with luncheons and other activities. Among the upcoming events:
The Beach Park Garden Club's Installation Luncheon will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club, 1601 S. MacDill Ave.
Mary Bessent will install the officers: Debra Porter, president; Jan Haber, first vice president; Betty Cox, second vice president; Patte Ayala, recording secretary; Nancy Blood, corresponding secretary; and Szu Farrell, treasurer.
The hosts are Porter, Evelyn Andretta and Mary Saad.
On May 17, the club will have its May Soiree cocktail party from 6 to 9 p.m. at Porter's home.

The Sunset Park Garden Club will have a fountain dedication Wednesday in memory of Jean Jones, a club member who died in 2007.
The event will be part of the club's 10 a.m. meeting at 4624 Browning Ave. Peggiann Fowler will conduct the dedication ceremony.
The meeting also includes annual reports, election of a new board and the announcement of 54th annual Flower Show winners by Chairwoman Jayne Smith.
Lunch will be served by Susan Barksdale, Lee Schmoll, Dixie Hale, Suzanne Landers and Val Van Orden.

The Davis Islands Garden Club will have a May Basket Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Davis Island Yacht Club, 1315 Severn Ave.

Tea Party Luncheon Has Speakers, Music
SOUTH TAMPA - The South Tampa Christian Women's Club and Stonecroft Ministries will sponsor a Scones & Cream Tea Party Luncheon at 11 a.m. Thursday.
The event will be at South Tampa Fellowship Church, 97 Biscayne Ave., with food from The Brunchery.
Vocalists Helen Jones, Victoria Hertenstein and Stephanie Farmer will entertain; Ann Ashton Garrison will offer etiquette tips; and Patti Frank, wife of an Air Force officer, will share her experiences.

Tampa Resident Gets National Nod
SOUTH TAMPA - Peggie D. Sherry, founder of Faces of Courage, was recently named one of 25 national Yoplait Champions.
The program honors ordinary people doing extraordinary things in the fight against breast cancer, according to a release. She received $1,000 for her breast cancer charity, 4115 W. Spruce St.
The recognition is from Yoplait Yogurt and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
May Events Are Bountiful
HARBOUR ISLAND - The May social calendar is full of fundraisers for a number of charities, including:
•The Spring Fashion Show, Boutique and Silent Auction, sponsored by Las Damas del Centro Asturiano, is at 11 a.m. today at the Westin Harbour Island Hotel, 725 S. Harbour Island Blvd.
Club members will model clothes from Coldwater Creek.

•The fourth annual Art of Giving Dinner, benefiting the United Way of Tampa Bay's Summer Care Initiative, is from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the T. Pepin Hospitality Centre, 4121 N. 50th St.
It will feature Lauren Weisberger, author of "The Devil Wears Prada," and includes a live auction of designer handbags.

•The fourth annual Night of a Thousand Thieves, benefiting the Drug Abuse Comprehensive Coordinating Office, is at 7 p.m. Friday at the Tampa Garden Club, 2629 Bayshore Blvd.
There will be a live and silent auction, food stations, music and the presentation of the Thomas E. McKell Award. The auction includes items seized by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in drug busts.

•A wine tasting to benefit the Shriners Hospital for Children - Tampa Unit will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the home of Mike Kwasin, 3613 S. Beach Drive.
It will feature wines from Fine Wine & Spirits Warehouse. Donations are $25 a person or $40 a couple. For information, call (813) 837-8941.
A wine tasting to benefit W.O.M.E.N., which provides reproductive health care assistance to low-income girls and women, will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Vintage Wine Cellars, 3629 Henderson Blvd.
Rebecca Steele, director of the West Central Florida ACLU regional office, is the speaker.

The South Tampa Shop-Along, which raises money for the High School Art Stars Scholarship Program of the Tampa Bay Business Committee for the Arts, is set for 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 10.
The event is a collaboration of independent retailers in South Tampa. Participants will donate 10 percent of proceeds from store sales during the event to the scholarship program.

Sword Of Hope Guild To Install Officers
DOWNTOWN - The Sword of Hope Guild of the American Cancer Society will have its Installation Luncheon at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Valencia Garden, 811 W. Kennedy Blvd.

State Rep. Traviesa To Offer Update

DAR DeSoto Chapter Meets Friday At UT
UT CAMPUS - Mary Bearss will speak about "The Historic School House" when the DeSoto Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution meets Friday.

Halloween Costumes Appropriate For Party
YBOR CITY - The Krewe of Hillsborough will sponsor its second "Halfway to Halloween Party" from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday at Club Skye, 1509 E. Eighth Ave.
The event will feature a costume contest, music and finger foods.
