Tampa's Lucy Sandelin, who begins competition today in bowling's Clash of Champions in Kansas City, won only one of three matches as she failed to defend her United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens title last week at Taylor, Mich.
Sandelin lost her opening match to 2001 Senior Queens champion Fran Minton of Iowa Park, Texas, 569-525, then topped Elizabeth Dawson of Sunnyvale, Calif., 597-526.
Sandelin was ousted from the double-elimination event with a 589-571 loss to Sharon Powers of Lakewood, Colo. Powers, down by 51 pins going into the final game, rolled 249 to sweep past Sandelin.
The Senior Queens was won by Sandy Postma of Lansing, Ill., who became the first three-time winner by defeating Marliss Tapp of Portage, Mich., 604-556. Postma, who captured her previous senior crowns in 2004 and 2006, won $3,000.
Sandelin will be among 16 champions of 2007 events competing for a prize fund of $100,000 in Kansas City. She'll be competing against such distaff stars as Kelly Kulick, Liz Johnson, Wendy McPherson and Lynda Barnes.
Barnes, the wife of 2007 PBA Bowler of the Year Chris Barnes, recently won the Queens tournament.
The finals will be televised Saturday on CBS from 5-6 p.m. and on Sunday on CBS from 4-5 p.m.
