TAMPA HEIGHTS - The city's Architectural Review Commission this week approved the first phase of renovations to the former Fire Station No. 5.
The commission supported plans for the general rehabilitation of the building, and the addition of a detached two-car garage, fencing and paving, said Dennis Fernandez, the city's architectural review and historic preservation manager.
Local artist Dominique Martinez bought the 6,500-square-foot building for $365,000 from the city last year and plans to turn it into his residence and a first-floor art gallery.
The station, 1910 N. Florida Ave., is a historical building and is located in local and national historical districts. Built in 1925, it was last used as a fire station in 1984 and then was used temporarily by other organizations.
Martinez and architect Franklin Sebastian will present second-phase plans at the commission's meeting at 6 p.m. June 2. The work will include adding a 1,000-square-foot addition at the rear of the building. The addition would have a contemporary metal roof and metal exterior walls.
The commission meets in the city council chambers on the third floor of city hall, 315 E. Kennedy Blvd.
Martinez owns Rustic Steel Creations in the Channel District. The company makes custom gates, railings, furniture, mirrors and outdoor sculptures, including giant dragons.
