SULPHUR SPRINGS - At 2 p.m. Tuesday, Metropolitan Ministries will hold the groundbreaking for 12 apartments that will be homes for the formerly homeless.
The Sanctuary, 750 E. Waters Ave., will be built on the former site of the Calvary United Methodist Church's sanctuary and fellowship hall. The facility was torn down within the past week.
The Methodist church donated the land and Lennar Homes and other builders will contribute in-kind construction totaling about half of the project's $2 million cost.
The project received city council approval in June despite some residents' objections that their community already was overburdened with group homes and needy families.
Metropolitan Ministries said the apartments are meant to put homeless families back on their feet. Tenants will be families receiving services from the nonprofit organization and they will be paired with mentors.
Up to 40 families daily are on a waiting list for housing, according to the nonprofit's representatives.
Mayor Pam Iorio, County Administrator Pat Bean and other government and elected officials are expected to attend the ceremonies.
