SUNSET PARK - After years of debate, the partial restoration of Lake Kipling is scheduled to begin the second week of June.
City officials say the work will not disrupt traffic on West Shore Boulevard on the east side of the lake, though homeowners surrounding the lake on Browning and Sunset avenues and San Jose Street may be inconvenienced.
The city awarded a $556,921 contract to Kimmins Contracting Corp. to install sediment and trash traps on three stormwater pipes draining into Lake Kipling. About 100 acres drain into the 21/2-acre lake, which is a block north of the intersection of West Shore and Bay to Bay boulevards.
The project also calls for removing muck from the lake bottom.
"I'm very happy that they are doing something after 30 years, but they are not doing adequately what needs to be done," said activist Ellie Montague, who has lived on Browning since the late 1960s.
The work is scheduled to be completed by mid-September, though Kimmins has until the end of the year to finish the job without penalty.
The cleanup is part of a larger urban lakes project funded by the city and the Southwest Florida Water Management District that also includes Lake Roberta in Seminole Heights and Lake Edna in Wellswood.
