Community Garden Clubs Prepare For Summer Break

TAMPA - Sunset Park Garden Club dedicated a fountain recently in memory of member Jean Jones, who died last year. Jones served in many positions, including president, flower show chairwoman and parliamentarian.

Her husband, Truby, son Lynn and daughter-in-law Claudia attended the ceremony at the club's garden center, 4624 Browning Ave. President Peggiann Fowler led the dedication ceremony.

The fountain, surrounded by rocks brought from North Carolina, is in the club's native plant garden and features four stone doves.

"Mom would love it," Claudia Jones told the members and guests.

Club members will gather June 3 for a Dutch-treat luncheon to install officers.

Beach Park Garden Club installed its officers recently at Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club. Mary Bessent conducted the ceremony.

Debra Porter, who served as president for 2007-08, was installed for another term and presented with a floral arrangement by Jan Haber, who is returning as first vice president.

Other officers for 2008-09 are: Betty Cox, second vice president; Patte Ayala, recording secretary; Nancy Blood, corresponding secretary; and Szu Farrell, treasurer.

Rose Circle Garden Club finished its season recently with a casual luncheon of salads and desserts brought by members. The event was held at Fred Ball Park on Bayshore Boulevard.

Symposium Geared Toward Musicians

YBOR CITY - The Artists and Writers Group will host a series of free workshops June 7 for emerging and seasoned musicians.

The symposium, called "Homemade," will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Performing Arts Building on the Hillsborough Community College Ybor City campus at 14th Street and Ninth Avenue. It is being organized by the Bay Area Artists and Musicians Organization and funded with an Ybor City Development Corp. grant.

The focus will be on self-promotion. Presenters include Ronny Elliott, Stan Arthur, John McEwen, Judy Tampa, George Pappas, Denise Moore, Maggie Council and Keith Arsenault.

The symposium will be followed by a performance showcase from 5 to 10 p.m. throughout Ybor City.

Celebrate Sinatra Set For Academy

BAYSHORE - The 11th annual Celebrate Sinatra will feature dancing to the 14-piece Joe Stagi Orchestra with vocals by Tom Tiratto.

The event, presented by Ken Walters Promotions, will be from 9 p.m. May 31 to 1 a.m. June 1 at the Academy of the Holy Names Ballroom, 3319 Bayshore Blvd. The black-tie optional event will include a Rat Pack Lounge with an open bar.

Tickets are $75 and include hors d'oeuvres; reserved tables for four are $500, and tables for six are $750. A portion of proceeds will benefit the Mental Health Care Foundation.

Playground Advocate Honored For Work

WEST SHORE - Stefani Busansky, who founded the Freedom Playground Foundation, was honored recently with the Leadership Award from the United Way of Tampa Bay.

She was recognized at the agency's annual volunteer luncheon.

Busanskydirected the creation of a barrier-free playground at Macfarlane Park.
