TAMPA - South Tampa artists Taylor Ikin and Laura Waller have been friends a long time. But this is only the second year they have exhibited together.
From Saturday through Dec. 8, the two will load the walls of Nuance Galleries with their watercolors of people and places in Florida and around the world.
For Ikin, the exhibit presents the first look at some of the paintings in her new series, "The Roads Less Traveled," a traveling show that moves to Dunedin Fine Art Center after Nuance.
The series follows her 2004-05 traveling exhibit, "The Hillsborough Collection," which focused on unseen treasures in our own backyard. The new series takes Ikin farther afield in Florida.
"I thought it was time to do something big again and to share with everybody the environmental advantages we have here in Florida, and to expand it to other counties," she said.
The paintings take the viewer off the beaten track, often into environmentally sensitive areas, in locales such as Aripeka, Cedar Key, Hudson and the Everglades.
Ikin does all her paintings on her favorite surface, a synthetic paper on which the colors slip and slide in ways not easy to control. That's what makes it exciting.
"The process is not one you can plan and achieve," she said. "You just have to paint and respond."
Waller paints on traditional cold-press watercolor paper. She has a romantic's soul, interpreting the scenes and peoples of her travels in a colorful style that blends realism and impressionism.
Meet the artists and see their works at the free opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Nuance, 804 S. Dale Mabry Highway. Call (813) 875-0511 for details.
Gallery Curator Opens Solo Show
South Tampa artist Debra Jo Radke usually is curator of the exhibits at TECO Plaza Art Gallery. This time, she is the featured artist.
Through Jan. 5, she will exhibit her recent acrylic paintings and expressive monoprints in an exhibit called "Web of Life." Radke layers color and texture on her paintings, a technique that serves her well in the printing, on which she collaborates with local master printer Erika Schneider.
Meet Radke at the free opening reception from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the gallery, 702 N. Franklin St. Call Radke at (813) 767-1600 for information.
