LifeLink Breakfast Spotlights Families
DOWNTOWN - Families of organ donors and recipients and supporters of LifeLink gathered recently at the University Club for the Treasured Lives Breakfast.
The event featured Emmitt and Charlotte Ray, whose 21-year-old son Jason was killed in an accident in 2007. His organs were donated to four people, and more than 120 people have been helped by tissue implants.
Jason was the team mascot for the University of North Carolina, and his story was told in an ESPN video, "A Ray of Hope," which was shown at the breakfast.
"Jason was a special young man," Charlotte Ray said. "From the time he was born, he was special."
Dennis Heinrichs, president and chief operating officer of LifeLink, said the family's story is one "of love and compassion. It is a story about heroes.
"This journey is all a result of Jason's foresight," he said.
The breakfast drew 210 guests and raised almost $134,000 for the LifeLink Legacy Fund, which assists families with medical needs.
