Exhibit Shows Luck Of The Draw

Published: October 1, 2008

TAMPA - This is the time to appreciate the sometimes simple, sometimes complicated art of drawing. The art form is the main draw at one exhibit and one activity in coming days.

Erika Schneider and Bleu Acier will celebrate drawing in its more developed forms in an exhibit called "Artists' Handwriting: Drawing, New York/Tampa."

Seventeen local artists and a few from New York will make their mark in the exhibit, which opens Friday and continues through Nov. 22.

Although drawing often is used as a preparatory tool for another work, such as a painting or print, these artists use it as a primary medium or significant part of the final piece.

Part of the attraction of drawing is the challenge.

"Drawing is the most direct and immediate manner for an artist to express an idea," Schneider said in a prepared statement. "There is no way to hide behind a line."

The participating artists include Kim Anderson, Neil Bender, Vicky Colombet, Elisabeth Condon, Herve DiRosa, Gregory Green, Joe Griffith, Dominique Labauvie, Pierre Mabille, Steve McClure, Max Neumann, Dominica Sanchez, Eduardo Santiere, Peter Soriano, Brian Taylor, Harvey Tulcensky and Voshardt/Humphrey.

Meet some of the artists at the free opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the gallery, 109 W. Columbus Drive. For information, call (813) 272-9746 or go to www.bleuacier.com.

•Drawing enthusiasts can take their pencils and charcoal to the Henry B. Plant Museum from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday for "Victoria Draw on the Veranda." The museum will supply the canvases (recycled window shades) and you provide the creativity.

The free event is meant to recall the late-19th century practice among artists of painting "en plein air," or outdoors. Several local artists will spend the afternoon painting and drawing on the museum's veranda and in Plant Park, providing inspiration as well as instruction. Guests can bring lawn chairs, blankets, coolers and lunch.

The museum is on the University of Tampa campus, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd. To learn more, call Sally Shifke at (813) 258-7302.

The event is a spinoff of "The Big Draw-Ruskin," a yearly event that celebrates John Ruskin's fondness for illustration and his belief in it as a medium for knowledge. The Ruskin workshops and activities continue through Oct. 11; go to www.south shoreartscouncil.org/bigdraw for information.

Amble Among Ybor Art Venues

Organized by the recently formed Ybor Arts Association, the free Saturday strolls are designed to encourage the public to rediscover the historic neighborhood as an arts center while enjoying its atmosphere and eateries.
