DAVIS ISLANDS - Renovations to the Roy Jenkins Pool and updates on a linear park were the focus of a Sept. 23 meeting between the city's Parks and Recreation Department and the community's civic advisory board.
Laurie Potier-Brown, who is overseeing the linear park project for the city, said she has been meeting with the city's transportation, planning and engineering departments as well as the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority.
The park would start at Davis Boulevard near Channel Drive, heading south along the airport side of the street and crossing at Martinique Avenue, where it would follow the sea wall to the Peter O. Knight Airport offices.
About $140,000 has been spent on the project, including environmental and design work, but a total cost hasn't been determined, Potier-Brown said. If bids come in under budget, the city will explore lengthening the trail north on Channel Drive along Seddon Channel.
The city is awaiting aviation authority approval before holding a public meeting to get residents' feedback, which should be scheduled in about a month, Potier-Brown said. Construction could begin by spring 2009.
The advisory board, which includes representative from the local civic association, chamber of commerce and neighborhood planning task force, also voted to seek bids for a study on improving the Roy Jenkins Pool, 154 Columbia Drive, which was built in 1929.
Parks and Recreation director Karen Palus estimates the study cost at $50,000.
Money for the park and pool projects comes from the $1 million Davis Islands Park Improvement Fund, which was donated by Tampa General Hospital in 2005 in return for leasing city land for its expansion.
