Business Groups Name Mayor Iorio Woman Of Year

WEST SHORE - Mayor Pam Iorio was named Woman of the Year recently by two chapters of Business & Professional Women.

Iorio was presented the recognition Oct. 8 at the Centre Club at the 16th annual Networking Night, sponsored by Downtown Tampa and Westshore Midday BPW. The event included a silent auction to raise money for scholarships given through the BPW Foundation.

Iorio told about 100 members and guests that she began her political career through BPW in Carrollwood and knew many people in the two chapters sponsoring the event.

"I consider you friends," she said. "I always get such a warm feeling when I am with you."

Cindy Maxie, the foundation's president, said the groups have raised more than $95,000 to help young women obtain educational opportunities.

The program also featured Sarah Deustchman, a member of the Westshore Midday BPW, who represented Florida at the National BPW Conference as a Young Careerist. The competition recognizes women who accomplish career goals by age 35.

Deustchman is a special agent criminal investigator with the Customs Enforcement Office in Tampa.

Bobbie Jean Williams, president of the Downtown Tampa BPW, was event chairwoman, and Cindy Argerious, president of the Westshore Midday BPW, was vice chairwoman.

Party To Kick Off Fishing Tournament

CHANNEL DISTRICT - A tropical-themed Captain's Party will kick off the seventh annual Gary Nix Fishing Tournament, which benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay.

The tournament, which will be Oct. 24-25, is held in memory of Nix, a club member who died at age 16. His grandmother, Paddy Moses of the Boys & Girls Clubs, started the event, which has raised money for an endowed scholarship at Hillsborough Community College, club programs and a planned gymnasium at the Liberty Boys & Girls Club.

The Captain's Party will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 24, poolside at the Towers of Channelside, and will feature a grouper and chicken dinner, music, a silent auction and a live auction, with Dick Crippen as the auctioneer. Items include airline tickets, a weekend at Little Gasparilla Island and a weekend of golf.

Moses said the poolside is one of the best locations the organizers have had for the party, which usually draws more than 200 guests.

"You can look out and see the skyline," she said. "We think It will be a gorgeous evening."

The fishing tournament will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 25 in Tampa Bay, with teams returning to the American Legion Marina, 5335 W. Prescott St., for an awards picnic.

Moses said about 20 boats and 75 anglers are expected to participate. There will be cash awards and other prizes; Capt. Mel Berman will present the awards.

The tournament, including the Captain's Party, is $200 for a team of four through Friday and then $250. Student registration is $25 through Friday and then $35.

Party tickets are $35, or $50 a couple.

Krewes Sponsor Royal Tartan Ball

DANA SHORES - The second Royal Tartan Ball will feature traditional Celtic fare and entertainment.

The event will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Tampa Shriners Activities Building, 4050 Dana Shores Drive. It is sponsored by the krewes of Brigadoon, Highlanders and Shamrock.

The ball includes food, drinks, a pipe band, dancing to the music of the Mark Anthony Band and songs by Joann Gilmartin. A silent auction is planned.

Colonial Dames Meet Thursday

PALMA CEIA - Jayne MacBryde will speak about "My Seafaring Ancestors" at Thursday's meeting of the Edmund Sheffield Chapter Colonial Dames XVII Century.

The 11 a.m. event will be at Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club, 1601 S. MacDill Ave.

MacBryde will share logs, journals and a picture of her ancestor Emily Pope Winsor, whose husband, Alexander, was captain of the Flying Cloud. For information, call (813) 839-2337.

Musicale Program Features Students

PALMA CEIA - Emily Cheng, 10, of Plant City, and University of Tampa students Elizabeth Bearss and Carissa Campbell will be featured at Friday's meeting of the Friday Morning Musicale at the Musicale Building, 809 Horatio St.

Registration is at 9:30 a.m., and a meeting of the Bay Ridge District of Florida Federation of Music Clubs is at 10 a.m. Connie Tuttle Lill, the state president, will be the guest speaker.

The 11:30 a.m. program also will feature Tara Richards Swartzbaugh, piano instructor at UT, and dancers Bobbie J. Ward and Denise Costa.

The lunch is at noon, with Cora Hueting and Vivian Noreiga.

The event is open to members and guests. Luncheon tickets are $15, and reservations are required by calling (813) 238-8008.

Events Benefit Local Schools

WEST TAMPA - Two local schools are having fundraising events Oct. 24.

•The Higgins Ball at 6:30 p.m. at Higgins Hall, 5225 Himes Ave., features a silent auction, music by the Bob Jackson Memorial Jazz Band and recognition of former teachers and outstanding alumni.

The event will provide scholarships and tuition assistance for students at St. Peter Claver Catholic School, which opened in 1894 and is Florida's oldest-continuing, African-American school.

•The fourth annual Big Night in the Big Easy at 7:30 p.m. at Mise en Place, 442 W. Grand Central Ave., will include a Cajun theme with food and drinks and music by jazz band Swamp Logic. A silent and live auction also are planned.

The event benefits Hope Preparatory Academy, which serves kindergarten through fifth-grade students with learning disabilities.

Photographer To Present Images From New Book

DOWNTOWN - Local photographer Bruce Hunt will present a slide show of images from his new book, "Florida Then and Now," from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Grand Salon of Plant Hall on the University of Tampa campus, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd.

Attendees can bring a bag lunch; the Henry B. Plant Museum will supply beverages and desserts.

Education Sorority Sets Brunch Meeting

TEMPLE TERRACE - Members of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary education sorority, will have an Oct. 25 brunch meeting at Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club.

The four Hillsborough County chapters, Alpha Rho, Delta, Delta Beta and Beta Zeta, recently elected countywide officers: Gwen Mora, president; Ann Newsome, treasurer; Kristi Ehler, secretary; and Anne Porter, chaplain.

The meeting will include a special founders day program, with members with at least 25 years of service receiving pins.

The Alpha Rho chapter recently elected its officers: Pam Tompkins, president; Loretta Campo, vice president; Cheryl Walters, recording secretary and historian; Susan Avery, corresponding secretary; Pauline Crumpton, treasurer; Josephine Agliano, sergeant-at-arms; and Mora, past president.

The group's projects include providing school supplies for the Children's Home, donating books to St. Joseph's Children's Hospital, providing money for the Kids and Canine program, awarding teaching grants in Hillsborough and helping maintain the Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship House in Tallahassee.
