All That Glitters Benefit Includes Chocolate Cake Contest

TAMPA - All That Glitters, the annual wine, beer and food tasting benefiting the MacDonald Training Center, will include new elements this year.

The event, set for 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 27 at the TPepin's Hospitality Centre, 4121 N. 50th St., will feature interactive cooking demonstrations by local chefs, including Fabrizio Schenardi of Pelagia Trattoria. The fundraiser also will include The Best Chocolate Cake in Town contest. Participants will bring partially finished cakes and add the decorations in front of the guests.

All That Glitters also will include live music, live and silent auctions, and samples from more than 20 restaurants and caterers. Mitchell's Fish House, Timpano's Chop House, NoHo Bistro and Chavez at Home are among the participants.

The MacDonald Training Center, established in 1953, serves adults with disabilities.

Harvest Moon Gala Set For Lavelle Hall
SOUTH TAMPA - Lavelle Hall will have a Harvest Moon Gala dinner-dance Saturdayfeaturing ballroom and Latin dancing.

The event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the hall, 5320 S. MacDill Ave. Following a dinner with wine, there will be dance performances by hall owner and professional dancer Roy Stone and some of his students, as well as social dancing for guests.

Garden Club Kicks Off Year

BEACH PARK - Members and potential members of the Beach Park Garden Club gathered Sept. 10 at the home of club President Debbie Porter to begin a new club year.

"This is a kickoff to start a new season," said Porter, who is beginning a second year as president. "We try to recruit new members."

Betty Cox was event host. Her committee members were Evelyn Andretta, Eileen Korach, Betty McInvale and Sharon Stoll.

Porter said the club is more than 50 years old and includes several founding members. She said plans include a holiday auction and luncheon to benefit local charities.

Sunset Park Club Hosts Annual Event

SUNSET PARK - The Sunset Park Garden Club will host its annual Membership Coffee from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at its garden center, 4624 Browning Ave.

The free event, which is hosted by President Jayne Smith and other club officers, is for members and guests. There will be coffee, punch, cookies and other food.

In celebration of the club's 80th anniversary, there will be a display of scrapbooks from through the years. Officers also will explain the club's function and activities.

Horticultural Bash Set For Garden Club

BAYSHORE - The Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, District VIII, will host a Horticulture Extravaganza, featuring speakers and a plant sale.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Tampa Garden Club, 2629 Bayshore Blvd. Admission is $10 and includes lunch.

Featured experts include: Bruce Turley, who will discuss native plants; Ann Pidgeon, who will speak about low-maintenance plants; and Tom Wolfe, past president of the Bromeliad Society International, speaking about bromeliads.

Krewe's Bike Night Benefits Children

NORTH TAMPA - The Krewe of Alegria will host its fifth annual Bike Night at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at the LA Hangout, 16411 N. Florida Ave.

South Tampa resident "Rocky" Valdez is the organization's founder and president.

Proceeds will benefit the krewe's Kickin' for Kids fund, which provides shoes for local children. Tickets are $10, including a buffet and beer.

WEST TAMPA - The Tampa Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will have its fall banquet Oct. 2 at Higgins Hall, 5225 N. Himes Ave.

SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - Michael Sinn, owner of Canaima Orchids in Palmetto, will speak at Thursday's meeting of the Tampa Bay Orchid Society.

Scholarship, Charities Benefit From Show

WEST SHORE - Pan American University Women will celebrate its 69th anniversary at the PAUW 2008 Fashion Show/Luncheon on Saturday at the Tampa Airport Hilton, 2225 Lois Ave.

Tana Levinson, the group's vice president, is chairwoman of the event, which begins with a silent auction at 11 a.m. Lunch is at noon and the fashion show at 1 p.m.

Joann Torretta Guagliardo, president and owner of First Impressions Image and Modeling Studio, is the fashion show producer and moderator. Fashions will be provided by Gary Platt, general manager of Dillard's at International Plaza.

Pan American members and their families who will model include: Nuri and Sophia Ayres; Ian, JoAnn and Jenna Duran; Joann G. Guagliardo; Susan, Rick and Bryce Jenkins; Loree and Caroline Semler; Mimi Talcott; Angeline Talcott Howell; and Kimberly and Mathew Valdes.

First Impression models are Kaayla Campbell, MacKenzie Gaudette, Jamie Miller, Olivia Smith and Kevin Williams.

Robb Smith is the announcer. Tampa artist Joyce Lazzara is donating a painting for the event.

Proceeds will benefit two University of South Florida Latino Scholarships, the Judeo Christian Health Clinic, the Children's Cancer Center, the Ybor City Museum Society and Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Fashion show committee members include Judy Blanco, Shirley Colmenares, RoseAnne Bowers, Sonia Spoto, Diana Mangione, Nora Lamb, Mimi Talcott, Mary Caltagirone, Sandra Sierra, Diana Fernandez, Nuri Ayres, Marie Valenti, Charlotte Valenti, Nancy White and Tana Levinson.
