EAST TAMPA - The city council's instructions were fulfilled last week when the East Tampa Community Revitalization Partnership elected new officers and expanded its board from nine to 13 members.
Brought onboard were residents Tatiana Denson, Molbert Scrivens and Donald Brookins, business owner Juan Davis of Fast Lane Clothing, and at-large representative Robert Blount III.
The at-large seat was vacated recently because of the resignation of Charles Dabney, chairman of the partnership's housing committee.
The council, in its role as the Community Redevelopment Agency, directed the East Tampa group last year to expand its board by setting aside permanent seats for residents and business and property owners.
The partnership works with the city to encourage redevelopment within East Tampa's borders of Hillsborough Avenue, interstates 275 and 4, and the city limits. A portion of property taxes collected in the district are reinvested in community projects.
The partnership was formed nearly six years ago after a series of community meetings. But over the years, residents serving on the board dropped out, at times leaving one or two members who lived in the community.
Board members serve two-year terms and are limited to two consecutive terms. A one-year gap is required before applying for additional terms.
The organization also approved new bylaws, adding a membership and outreach committee and amending the group's voting rights. The old bylaws restricted voting members to those who attended at least two consecutive general partnership meetings.
The new rules only require attendance at two meetings within the fiscal year running from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30.
