Published: April 1, 2009

Dale Mabry Campus Art Gallery of Hillsborough Community College presents "Elvis: Grit & Grace," an exhibit of photographs of Elvis Presley from the late 1950s and early '60s. Opening Thursday and continuing through May 15, the 33 photographs in the exhibit have been culled from the CBS Television Photo Archives.

Included are candid shots taken before Presley's first appearance and during his second appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1956 at CBS Studio 50. With long captions attached to each photograph, the exhibit explores the man, the music and the controversy that Presley inspired in 1950s America.

The exhibit opens at 11:30 a.m. Thursday with performances by Elvis tribute artists Jeff LaJess, John McDade and Todd Redish at the Dale Mabry Campus lower patio area.

Call gallery director Elsa Villa at (813) 253-7386 for information.

One Gallery, Two Shows

Baisden Gallery presents two new exhibitions by two artists Friday through May 30.

Columbus, Ohio-based artist David Borchers creates contemporary glass sculptures from antique bottles he has collected during extensive travels. Averaging 80 inches in height, the sculptures of individual elements are interlocked with a metal rod in the center that attaches to a solid metal base for stability. He signs his pieces with his name plus that of the late Corbett Reynolds, his friend and mentor.
North Carolina artist Charles Walker uses the simple application and repetition of line, color and texture to create a painting in which color is allowed "to simply exist on its own," he says in a statement on his Web site.

The public is invited to the opening reception for both exhibits from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the gallery, 442 Grand Central Ave., Suite 210. Borchers will talk about his work at 6:30 p.m.

Call the gallery at (813) 250-1511 for information.
Annual Art Show Returns

This weekend marks the 20th year for the annual Hyde Park Village Art Fair.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, the closed-to-traffic streets of the Hyde Park shopping area will be filled with booths displaying original creations by talented artists from all over the country. Following previous trends, there will be everything from finely wrought sterling silver earrings to large metal outdoor sculptures, and much in between.

Howard Alan Events, the festival's promoter, requires the artists to be on site throughout the show. It is an opportunity for people to interact with the artists.

Admission is free. Go to www.artfestival.com for information.

Studios Open To Public Saturday

The Artwalk in Ybor City takes on new zest Saturday when the Ybor Art Colony opens its doors to the public.

The Ybor Art Colony is a group of eight emerging artists who work and exhibit together in space at 1521½ Seventh Ave., directly over the King Corona Cigar Factory.

The colony is one of more than 20 members of the Ybor Art Association, which sponsors the monthly Artwalk.

"And they make up a good proportion of the artists in Ybor," said Walter Romeo, who, with Brad Cooper, started the association this year as a way to promote the studios, galleries and museums of Ybor. "They're inviting people who are here for the Artwalk to come up and observe them hard at work. This is the kind of thing we're trying to promote. We find most art customers like seeing artists at work."

The colony also will exhibit a number of finished works in the gallery at the same location. Walking maps and guides to other venues in the walk are available at the Art Colony.

The free Artwalk event is from noon to 6 p.m. the first Saturday of each month. It is designed as a daytime family event for self-guided tours of the many art and other venues Ybor has to offer. Parking is free on Saturdays in Ybor.

For information, call Walter Romeo at (813) 495-4649.

Student Art Shows Originality

The University of Tampa will display the accomplishments of its senior art students in a juried exhibition of their work from Friday through April 30, at the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery on campus. This annual event offers an opportunity to see the kinds of innovative thinking and creativity that often characterize the young, and to see their talents in a variety of media including paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures, digital media, animation and mixed media.

The public is invited to meet the students and view their art at an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, during which Todd Smith, director of the Tampa Museum of Art, will award more than $3,500 in prizes.

The gallery is in the R.K. Bailey Art Studios at 310 N. Boulevard. Call gallery director Dorothy Cowden at (813) 253-6217 with questions.

Photography Emerges At Emporium

Tampa Artist Emporium, in cooperation with Kick Start My Art, will host another "Emerge" art event this month, in which artists from outside the gallery are invited to display their art for one month.

April's theme is "Photo Show." Each participating artist will exhibit two photographs.

The free opening reception is from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at the gallery, 3415 Bay to Bay Blvd. Call (813) 835-0212 for information.
